Agriculture
is a large part of what makes San Diego County unique and the Rainbow Creek
watershed is no exception. Agriculture (consisting of commercial
nurseries, agricultural fields and orchards) have been indentified in the
TMDL as one of the sources of high nitrogen and
phosphorus levels in Rainbow Creek.
By responsibly using fertilizers and pesticides, agricultural operations will
reduce
their impact on Rainbow Creek. Eliminating any runoff of irrigation water
will also reduce the impact of nitrogen and phosphorus on Rainbow Creek.
The brochure "Micro-Irrigation
Tips for San Diego County Orchards" is a great way to learn about practical
(and easy) ways to increase your grove's irrigation system's efficiency (please
In "Practical Irrigation
Scheduling" you'll learn about how to set up your irrigation schedule to
maximize the benefit for your groves or orchards (please click
HERE to download).
If you are interested in learning more about your irrigation system, Mission
RCD's
Mobile
Ag Lab will come out (for FREE!) and conduct an Irrigation System Evaluation for
our grove, nursery or orchard*. Just call our office at (760) 728-1332 if
you would like to set up an appointment to find out what your irrigation
system's emission uniformity is and how to increase it (and save you water and
money!) if it is low. The Mobile Ag Lab will also generate a water
schedule for your specific grove.
More information on Best Management Practices
(BMPs) for agricultural operations can be found in the
Rainbow Creek Nutrient Reduction Plan.
*The grove or nursery must be at least 2 acres of planted
trees or potted plant material and must be located within Mission RCD's district
boundaries.
