The groundwater levels in Rainbow Valley are unusually high (close to the surface of the ground) due to geological features.  There is a hard rock layer throughout the valley floor, which prevents water from percolating deep into the soil.  This means that the water is trapped near the ground's surface during the rainy season as it drains down Rainbow Creek to the Santa Margarita River and the Pacific Ocean.

Special consideration for septic systems in Rainbow Valley should be made as the drain fields can sometimes be sitting in the water table.  The septic systems are particularly vulnerable to failure if they are not properly cared for and maintained.  Please click HERE to view the pdf of our septic system maintenance and care brochure, "Septic System Sense".  In this brochure, you'll learn easy tips to care for your septic system including how often to have the tank pumped, what you should and should not put in the system, and how water usage can affect the performance of the system.

Two other helpful items are the "Quick Guide" information sheet on septic system maintenance (please click HERE to download) and the maintenance checklist.  The maintenance checklist is useful to keep track of everything that is done to care for the septic system (please click HERE to download).

Hardcopies of the brochure, information sheet and maintenance checklist can be picked up for FREE from our office!

More information regarding Best Management Practices (BMPs) can be found in the Rainbow Creek Nutrient Reduction Management Plan.
