Xerces Society Volunteer Information

Logo for the Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation.

The WMC is a community-science initiative led by the Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation that monitors overwintering sites of western monarch butterflies, and volunteers join by committing at least 15 hours each fall-winter, attending training, following survey protocols and submitting data electronically.

Prospective volunteers must register annually, complete required training and agreements (code of conduct, waiver) before they begin monitoring, and are encouraged to review the step-by-step guide and FAQ to determine if this effort fits their schedule and capacity.

Volunteers must also be prepared for field conditions, take safety precautions (e.g., bring water, inform a contact of their survey plan, share location) while conducting surveys at overwintering sites.
